From token promises to real transactions: How x402 unlocks the decentralized service economy

September 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Topic: The webinar covers x402, a payments protocol (originally built by Coinbase around the dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code) that Algorand has implemented as a live, production settlement layer for machine-to-machine and API payments.

Host: Algorand Foundation

Core pitch — “token promises to real transactions”:

  • x402 lets a server respond to an unpaid request with an HTTP 402 status plus payment requirements; the client then sends a payment transaction back in an X-PAYMENT header, a facilitator verifies/settles it on Algorand, and the original request is served.
  • No accounts, emails, OAuth, or API keys needed — just pay-per-call.
  • This turns crypto payments from a speculative/token-narrative story into an actual working transaction rail for everyday API/data access.

Why Algorand specifically:

  • Low, predictable fees make micropayments economically viable
  • Instant, deterministic finality (~2 sec) suits real-time HTTP request/response flows
  • 10,000 TPS with zero downtime since launch
  • Smart-contract composability enables programmable pricing, authorization, and usage rules

“Unlocking the decentralized service economy”:

  • Framed around AI agents and automated commerce — agents paying other agents or services autonomously, per-call, without human-in-the-loop billing
  • Also pitched as a simpler win for ordinary API monetization: replacing subscription/tier/key-based gating with true pay-per-use
  • GoPlausible operates a live x402 Facilitator on Algorand mainnet, already processing real merchant volume (e.g., via the “x402 Global Challenge”)
