Staci Warden announced William Herkelrath as Algorand Foundation’s new CEO, praising his experience, intelligence, and vision while transitioning herself to roles focused on encouragement, enthusiasm, and ecosystem evangelism.

Herkelrath, who officially started August 31, 2026, brings expertise from Chainlink, Curv (acquired by PayPal), and co-founding AI automation platform K3 Labs, aligning with Algorand’s push into institutional finance and post-quantum security.

The smooth CEO transition after Warden’s nearly five-year tenure highlights the ecosystem’s appeal, with Algorand already running live post-quantum accounts using Falcon signatures and recent board additions including Herkelrath.

Who is William Herkelrath?

William Herkelrath is a longtime fintech and blockchain operator who officially became CEO of the Algorand Foundation on August 31, 2026. He has more than two decades of experience spanning product, sales, and executive roles, with a consistent focus since 2017 on turning blockchain into practical tools for institutions.

He studied at George Washington University and the University of California, San Diego. Earlier in his career he was an early executive at three startups that were later acquired by Fortune 500 companies. That pattern of building and selling companies carries through his later blockchain work.

His most prominent crypto roles were:

  • Chief Revenue Officer at Curv, a digital-asset custody firm acquired by PayPal in early 2021.
  • Leadership positions at Chainlink Labs, including Managing Director of the Enterprise Division and Head of Business Development, where he worked on connecting traditional finance to on-chain data and oracles.
  • Co-founder (around 2023) of K3 Labs, an AI-first platform for automating Web3 workflows and running AI-agent-managed processes.

Herkelrath has also written and spoken on why Web3 has struggled with mainstream users and how enterprises should prepare for blockchain. He has framed his Algorand role around two priorities the network already emphasizes: institutional adoption and post-quantum cryptography, noting that Algorand already runs live post-quantum accounts rather than treating the issue as a distant roadmap item.

In short, he is a commercially oriented operator with custody, oracle, enterprise sales, and now AI-automation experience—exactly the profile Algorand is highlighting as it tries to convert technical work on quantum-resistant signatures into an institutional selling point.
